Trump is Stripping Food Assistance from Families

Hello,

It’s been a month since Republicans shut down the government instead of negotiating with Democrats to save health care. Now, the latest pawn in their diabolical games is stripping away food assistance from millions of Americans.

Nearly 42 million Americans depend on SNAP to feed their families every day, including over 28,000 households in our district alone – and this food assistance is hours away from running out because of Republicans’ cruel and reckless policy decisions.

TRUMP IS WEAPONIZING HUNGER

SNAP benefits require funding from the federal government to be distributed, which is compromised under a government shutdown. But there is a backup option – there’s a pot of money Trump has access to that would fund SNAP. But the White House is refusing to use it.

The administration has the power and funds available to fully fund SNAP in November, yet Trump is choosing to take away food assistance from Americans, letting millions of families and children go hungry. This comes after Republicans already cut $186 billion from SNAP in the One Big, Ugly Bill – the biggest cut in history at a time when hardworking people are struggling to make ends meet.

Trump and his minions do not care about American families – as seen from their month-long refusal to save health care to their newfound denial of food assistance across the country.

DEMOCRATS PUSHING BACK

This level of cruelty is incorrigible, and I refuse to sit back and let Republicans silently toy with Americans’ well-being. I joined 213 of my Democratic colleagues in demanding that Secretary Rollins use the administration’s power and the SNAP contingency fund to provide full November food assistance as the Republican shutdown enters its second month.

Americans shouldn’t go hungry because Republicans are unwilling to negotiate. Republicans, alongside the administration, refuse to fix this crisis they’ve created, and now our veterans, children, and seniors are paying the price. It’s despicable.
