Pushing Back Against Trump’s Reckless Rampage

Over the last few weeks, President Trump and House Republicans have recklessly ramped up their assault on democracy. Between illegally calling in the National Guard to break up protests in California and advancing the most destructive congressional budget in recent history, their betrayal of the American people is deeply alarming.
Trump’s big, ugly boondoggle – masked as a “cost-saving” budget bill – will devastate Americans across the country. Their congressional schemes will cut Medicaid and threaten Medicare, taking health care away from millions of everyday Americans while giving huge tax breaks to billionaire Republican donors. Across the country, Americans are already struggling to keep up with the high cost of living, and instead of passing policy solutions to drive down those costs, Republicans are threatening to make it even worse with this legislation.
These cuts to Medicaid will take health care away from 16 million Americans – in addition to raising premiums, copays, and deductibles for tens of millions more. And now, Senate Republicans are considering even harsher amendments to this bill by targeting Medicare for huge new cuts that will make it harder for seniors to get the health care they have earned through a lifetime of hard work.
And that doesn’t even get into the largest reduction to food assistance in American history: in slashing SNAP, Republicans are taking food away from children, seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities. Tens of millions of kids will lose their school meals, and food will be taken from the mouths of our neighbors. While everyday Americans lose under Trump’s outrageous budget scheme, billionaires will reap huge rewards: this GOP Tax Scam showers huge new tax breaks on the wealthiest Americans while still exploding the national debt by $3 trillion. Republicans are lying through their teeth by touting this bill as a cost-saver.
As I’m sure many of you have seen, Trump has also expedited his deportation agenda and endangered Californians’ public safety up and down our state. And his decision to seize control of California National Guard soldiers and deploy them in Los Angeles is one of the most dangerous power grabs I've seen from this administration yet – and that is saying a lot. Neither Governor Newsom nor local and state law enforcement requested assistance with keeping the peace, but Trump deployed the National Guard and U.S. Marines anyway. Trump and his administration continue to blatantly violate the due process rights of immigrants and inflamed the situation by breaching state sovereignty and federalizing the National Guard.
I’ve joined House Democrats in demanding that Trump rescind his unlawful deployment, reinstate local control, and respect Americans' constitutional rights. We are united to eliminate Trump’s voice in our local jurisdictions – and also to stop Republicans’ big, ugly boondoggle from becoming law. Republicans still have a chance to stop rubber stamping Donald Trump and protect the people they represent by joining us to kill the bill and stand up to his ongoing illegal policymaking. I know many of you may feel angry, scared, or anxious – but I want to assure you that my team and I are showing up every day to push back against Trump’s illegal, irresponsible schemes. The fight isn’t over.
