Pushing Back Against Trump’s One Big, Ugly Law
Hello,
I’ve returned to Washington D.C. this week after House Republicans passed Donald Trump’s One Big, Ugly Law – and I, like many of you, am still reeling from the fallout. This sweeping piece of legislation, signed on July 4, 2025, has sparked chaos and confusion across the country as healthcare, food assistance, and our economy have all been thrown on the chopping block.
And now, just two weeks later, people are already facing the consequences, while billionaires and big corporations celebrate major tax breaks. And that doesn’t even get into the $3 trillion this legislation adds to our national debt, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.
It's important that each and every one of you understand the facts of this bill, and how these cuts to Medicaid and food assistance will impact folks up and down the North Coast. Here are the dangers of Donald Trump’s One Big, Ugly Law that I’m most concerned about:
-
Kicks 2.4 million Californians off their healthcare
-
Triggers a $3,070 average increase in health care premiums for people in CA-02 covered under the Affordable Care Act
-
Puts 28 rural hospitals across California at risk of shutting their doors
-
Compromises entire or partial food assistance for over 360,000 Californians
-
Eliminates 110,000 jobs in California’s manufacturing and energy industries
-
Raises energy costs for California families by $670 annually, on average
-
Threatens over 620,000 students in California who depend on Pell grants for their education
-
Adds $3 trillion to the national debt
-
Triggers more than $500 billion in automatic cuts to Medicare because of extreme impact on the deficit
I know it may seem unfathomable that Trump and House Republicans voted for a law that strips earned benefits from millions and balloons our national debt – all to reward wealthy donors – but this is the harsh reality we’re now facing.
I was proud to stand alongside House Democrats to vote NO on this One Big, Ugly Law, and let me be clear: we are not done pushing back.
We are pursuing every available avenue to mitigate the damage of these reckless policy moves, and we will ensure that Republicans are held accountable for the chaos they’ve created, especially as people begin to feel the impacts of the inevitable price hikes, layoffs, and hospital closures. We will fight to restore critical funding through the budget process this year, we will support litigation efforts where necessary to challenge these destructive actions in court, and we will continue working with allies at every level to protect families and communities who stand to lose the most.
