Hello,
The April 15th deadline to file your taxes is just around the corner, and I want to make sure you know about some new ways we’ve created to help you file and save money on your taxes.
Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act that I helped pass, you can now file your taxes directly with the IRS for free! This new Direct File tool provides eligible Californians a free, simple, and secure option to file their taxes online. It’s available in English and Spanish, and it also provides real-time online support from IRS customer service specialists. Thousands of taxpayers have already successfully used the program. To find out if you’re eligible, please visit directfile.irs.gov today.
I also encourage you to review the clean energy and home improvement tax credits that you can take advantage of when you file. That means if you’ve bought something like an electric vehicle, solar panels, or home insulation, you could end up with more money back in your pocket! These include:
- Tax credits for new or used electric vehicles, as well as electric vehicle chargers;
- The Residential Clean Energy Upgrades Tax Credit, an uncapped 30% tax credit for upgrades such as the purchase or installation of solar panels, solar water heaters, geothermal heat pumps, battery storage systems, and more;
- The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Tax Credit, another 30% tax credit up to $3,200 for weatherizing your home with things like new exterior doors, windows, and insulation;
- And more!
Although we can't help you file your taxes or give tax advice, we are still here to assist you if you are having a problem with the IRS. Below is an example of some of the work my office has done to help our constituents.
"I contacted Rep. Huffman's office after waiting two years for the IRS to send me my 2021 tax refund. Each time I visited the IRS website to track my refund it said it was still being “processed,” and I was unsuccessful with getting an IRS representative to pick up the phone. Rep. Huffman's staff gathered the paperwork they needed from me, contacted the IRS, and explained the situation. Soon thereafter, the IRS finally unfroze my account and released the refund. I received the entirety of what I was owed as well as the interest that had accrued over the past two years. I’m grateful for Congressman Huffman’s team for their diligence and quick response.”
