Freethought Caucus to Hold Briefing on White Christian Nationalism and the Capitol Insurrection

March 10, 2022

Washington, D.C. – Thursday, March 17, 2022, at 6:30pm ET, members of the press are invited to attend a virtual briefing for members of Congress and staff hosted by the Congressional Freethought Caucus about the role of White Christian Nationalism during the January 6 insurrection.

Although the chaos and violence of that day have been much-discussed, the prominence of Christian Nationalism has not – until now. The Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty and the Freedom from Religion Foundation recently co-released a report demonstrating the myriad ways that Christian Nationalism was the motivating and unifying force of the insurrection. Their report is the most thorough and comprehensive accounting of Christian Nationalism before and during the insurrection. The Congressional Freethought Caucus is honored to host some of the authors of the report to discuss Christian Nationalism and its implications for the future of democracy.

Speakers:

  • Amanda Tyler- Executive Director, Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty
  • Dr. Samuel L. Perry- Associate Professor of Sociology, University of Oklahoma
  • Dr. Jemar Tisby- Speaker, Historian, & Author of The Color of Compromise: The Truth about the American Church’s Complicity in Racism
  • Andrew Seidel- Director of Strategic Response, Freedom From Religion Foundation
