Rep. Huffman Statement on SCOTUS Presidential Immunity Ruling
Today, U.S. Representative Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) released the following statement regarding the Supreme Court of the United States ruling on Trump v. United States:
“Today, American democracy was dealt a crushing blow by a radical and corrupt Supreme Court. With its sweeping new “absolute immunity” rule, the Court is all but inviting a President to abuse power in ways that have historically been unthinkable, including not just ignoring laws and flouting Congress, but taking bribes, jailing or killing political rivals, even ordering a military coup and ending American democracy.
“The prospect of an aspiring dictator like Donald Trump wielding unfettered Presidential power with impunity should alarm every person in America, especially since Trump and the MAGA extremists behind his Project 2025 “war plan” make no secret of their authoritarian agenda.
“The door to dictatorship was just opened wide by six unelected, unaccountable Supreme Court Justices. This decision, which will go down with Dred Scott as among the worst in American history, crystalizes what is at stake in this moment, and why Americans must stand firm in defending our 237-year-old democracy against those who would try to end it.”
