Rep. Huffman Announces More than $4.4 Million in Federal Grants for Local Health Centers
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congressman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has awarded more than $4.4 million in federal funds to four health centers in Huffman’s 2nd Congressional District for 2016. With these federal grants, health centers in Humboldt, Marin, Mendocino, and Sonoma counties will be able to continue providing primary care to populations in need, including low-income and homeless populations, children and families, and medically-vulnerable individuals. Health centers provide critical services for their patients, many of whom have no other access to preventative and primary care.
“These funds will allow health centers across California’s North Coast to continue providing the excellent and essential services that my constituents depend on.” said Huffman. “Making sure these organizations have reliable federal support is vital not only to their operations, but to the well-being of thousands living in their communities.”
Alexander Valley Healthcare, which received $345,748 in discretionary funds, is the only safety net provider in its 561 square-mile rural section of Northern Sonoma County, and is the only area dental provider that accepts uninsured patients or patients with Medicare. Mendocino Community Health Clinic, which received more than $1.7 million, operates across three sites and serves approximately 60,000 people, primarily rural, low-income, and elderly individuals, and those diagnosed with chronic illnesses or dual diagnoses. Open Door Community Health Centers, which received over $2 million, serves populations in largely-rural Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. The target population at the Ritter Center, which received $342,175, includes the more than five thousand homeless or at-risk of homelessness individuals living in Marin County.
The Health Center Program supports over 1,300 patient-directed organizations across the nation that provide primary and preventative care to medically underserved populations. Supplemental funds ensure continued access to comprehensive and quality health care for vulnerable individuals in areas served by health centers.
