Rep. Huffman Announces Federal Grants to Assist Stranded Marine Mammals on the North Coast

September 07, 2016

Washington, D.C.-Congressman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) today announced that the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has awarded $292,415 in federal funds to educational centers across Huffman’s congressional district to study, provide education, outreach and improved response time to assist stranded marine mammals.

“From California sea lions to harbor seals, the North Coast is fortunate to have a diversity of marine mammals as part of our coastal ecosystems and communities, and we must do all we can to protect these intelligent creatures,” said Rep. Huffman. “This vital federal support will allow research hospitals and educational centers to improve their response time to assist stranded animals and ensure that they have the care they need to be rehabilitated and released back into their natural habitat.”

The funding is given under the 2016 Prescott Marine Mammal Rescue Assistance Grants programs which support a core mission of NOAA Fisheries – the conservation and recovery of protected marine species – by helping to improve marine mammal stranding response capabilities. Using the funds, trained professionals and volunteers provide valuable environmental intelligence as they respond to marine mammals in distress, helping NOAA establish links between the health of marine mammals, coastal ecosystems, and coastal communities.
