Huffman Statement on Mendocino, Sonoma State of Emergency Declaration

April 21, 2021

Washington, D.C. – Today, Representative Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) released the following statement regarding Governor Gavin Newsom’s declaration of a state of emergency in Mendocino and Sonoma Counties due to drought conditions in the Russian River watershed:

“Climate-driven natural disasters are worsening every year, and we know another dangerously dry year is on the horizon. It’s critical we act early before impacts become more severe, and I’m glad that Governor Newsom has made this emergency declaration. This strategic, targeted approach will ensure that resources are directed where they’re needed most,” said Rep. Huffman. “I will continue to work to bring federal resources to the table and do all we can to prevent the compounding devastation caused by severe drought. I will also be convening local partners to talk about the path forward for our district, both this year and for the long haul – we cannot keep lurching from crisis to crisis.”

In the coming weeks, Representative Huffman plans to lead a forum with Representative Mike Thompson (CA-05), State Senator Mike McGuire, and Assemblymember Jim Wood to discuss the drought response.
