Huffman Statement on House Passage of the Tea Party Spending Bill
WASHINGTON-Congressman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) released the following statement after voting against the House's Continuing Resolution to fund the government. This bill is an irresponsible step towards a possible government shutdown and locks the sequester in place, which costs Americans jobs and guts critical investments in education, scientific research, and transportation infrastructure.
“Instead of working on responsible, bipartisan bills that will actually see the light of day, the GOP majority has once again yielded to the Tea Party with a hyper-partisan political statement that will never become law,” Congressman Huffman said. "The American people expect Congress to govern, not play political games. As the budget debate continues, I'm hopeful that responsible House Republicans -- those who don't want to shut down the government -- will step up to the plate and prevent the Tea Party fringe from shutting down our government and our economic recovery.”
Huffman voted for the Democratic alternative, authored by Budget Ranking Member Chris Van Hollen, to fund the government and end the devastating, across-the-board cuts of the sequester with a mix of spending cuts and revenue increases in order to reduce the deficit in a responsible way.
