Congressman Huffman Fights for Trinity County Economy
Washington, D.C. – Today, Representative Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) introduced bipartisan legislation with neighbor, Representative Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale), to extend the authority of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest to collect and retain marina fees to enhance recreation and improve access at the Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area.
“This is an important piece of legislation to Trinity County, its residents, economy, and the many visitors it welcomes every year,” said Representative Huffman. “The Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area is a critical economic driver in my district, and the fees retained through this bill ensure the long-term vitality of the attraction and its appeal for surrounding areas. The fee retention authority supports Trinity County and meets the needs of many visitors that our region depends on.”
"A big thank you to Congressman Huffman for his bi-partisan effort in addressing this issue identified by the Trinity County Collaborative Group to the Trinity County Board of Supervisors in solving this important recreation economy issue for the county," said Judy Morris, Chair of the Trinity County Board.
The authority to collect and retain fees is critical for the Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area, which manages 212,000 acres, including 48,480 lake surface areas and 12 highly developed commercial marinas. Marina fees are invested in recreation enhancement projects such as boat ramp improvements, boating and water safety public service announcements, improved access to the lakes for persons with disabilities, floating restrooms, and interpretive and educational programs. The bill extends the fee retention authority to Fiscal Year 2027.
Rep. Huffman has also worked with Rep. LaMalfa to include this language in the final appropriations bills for fiscal year 2020 that are currently being negotiated.
