Information About Interim Emergency Coronavirus Relief

April 30, 2020

Hello,

I hope you and your family are remaining safe and healthy. Every day, we see the need for further federal action to combat the coronavirus crisis. I have heard from many of you who are struggling to make ends meet, or to keep your business running, or to access economic impact payments or other supports.

Last week, I flew back to Washington to cast a vote to approve another interim emergency funding bill that will provide emergency resources to protect American lives and livelihoods.

This is still not enough to respond to the massive upheaval of the pandemic, but I am appreciative of all the work our negotiating team did to get improvements into the bill:

  • For small businesses: we have strengthened the Paycheck Protection Program with $310 billion in additional funding, with $30 billion reserved for community-based lenders, small banks and credit unions and $30 billion for medium-sized banks and credit unions. We have also secured strong protections to ensure that farmers have access to this vital assistance.
  • For hospitals and health care workers: we secured $75 billion to provide resources, including Personal Protective Equipment, to hospitals and health care workers.
  • For all Americans: we have secured $25 billion for testing, which is the key to reopening the economy and resuming our lives. The legislation that we approved requires the Trump administration to develop a national strategic testing policy that will focus on increasing domestic testing capacity including testing supplies.

This bill is an important lifeline, but there is still a desperate need for more: more financial support to families who have lost income, more funding for state, tribal, and local governments whose budgets are hurting and will need to cut public services, and more access to loans and other support for employers. I know that much more needs to be done, and I will keep working to ensure we put people first and secure the relief needed to protect American lives and revive our economy in the upcoming CARES 2 bill.
