Delivering for Climate, Families, & Health Care: A Message from Rep. Huffman

December 02, 2021

Hello,

This past month was one of incredible legislative success for people in America. President Joe Biden signed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act into law and the House passed the Build Back Better Act, delivering transformational investments for families across the U.S. and historic climate action.

We are also delivering unprecedented investments in affordable housing, rural broadband, home care, and an expansion of Medicare. Learn more about what's included in the Build Back Better Act here. These proposals will have a meaningful impact on the lives of every Californian, and it’s critical the Senate complete consideration of this bill immediately and send it to the President’s desk for his signature.

Rep. Huffman and members of the congressional delegation gathered at COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland.

I had the honor of joining world leaders at the international climate summit, COP26, this month to develop innovative, global solutions to combat the climate crisis. American leadership is essential to international climate action. This is a decade of actions, not just ideas. Congress understands the imperative of this crisis and is navigating rather than surrendering to political obstacles to deliver climate action. We were able to come to the table to show we are not just back in—we’re all in to solve the climate crisis.

What Else We’ve Been Working On

  • I reintroduced my bill with Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) to fully fund the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, critical legislation to fully fund special education services. This is a program for which I have been advocating since I got to Congress, and I’m glad to once again lead my colleagues in ensuring Congress holds up its end of the bargain to ensure all students have the opportunity to succeed.
  • As Chair of the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Water, Oceans, and Wildlife, I held a hearing on my bill to update and reauthorize the Magnuson-Stevens Act (MSA), the primary law governing federal fisheries management and conservation. Through a uniquely inclusive, transparent process, we were able to create a bill that meets the challenges of the climate crisis and puts the focus back on the needs of fishing communities and I’m excited we were able to take the bill one step further with this hearing.
  • I introduced a bill to return sacred ground to the Karuk Tribe, correcting an historic injustice. These places are not only majestic, they are central to Karuk history, religion, culture and identity. Placing them in trust ensures that the Karuk culture and way of life can endure for future generations.

As the end of the year quickly approaches, I also want to remind you that the 2022 open enrollment period for health care is now open until January 31, 2022, for folks in California. If you are not covered, would like to change your plan, or need to look at options, please visit healthforcalifornia.com or call 1-877-752-4737. It could be more affordable than you think to get covered.

Recently, scientists in South Africa detected a new coronavirus variant, omicron, that is spreading globally. The best way to strengthen your protection if you’re already vaccinated is to get a booster shot. For those not yet fully vaccinated: get vaccinated today. As always, my staff is hard at work serving you. Whether it’s assistance working with a federal agency or providing information about legislation and policy – we're here to help. Here’s just one example of how my team can help you:

"Thanks to the assistance of Congressman Huffman’s staff, we received a check from the IRS for $22,940 which returns our forced tax payment as well as compensatory interest after the IRS erroneously rejected our solar tax credit in our 2020 tax return. We are extremely grateful for the outstanding assistance provided by Congressman Huffman’s office, and we are enjoying our energy-efficient, solar powered home! The staff’s interest, perseverance, and insistence in this matter led to its successful resolution.”
