A Coronavirus Update from Rep. Huffman
Hello Friend,
I want you to know that I am here, as your federal representative in Congress, to have your back in what looks to be just the beginning of a public health emergency.
California has now lost a life to the coronavirus. As this epidemic continues to spread, it’s important for you to know that the federal government is here to support state efforts to keep the public safe and informed.
Yesterday, the House of Representatives – with strong bipartisan support – approved robust legislation to provide $8.3 billion through an emergency supplemental appropriations bill to fully address the coronavirus and protect Americans from the growing public health crisis. The Senate passed this bill today, and I expect President Trump to follow suit and sign this fully-funded, science-based supplemental funding bill into law quickly.
I believe Americans deserve a coordinated, comprehensive, whole-of-government response to prepare for the spread of coronavirus. Our collective first priority must be public safety, and we must govern responsibly to meet the challenges facing our nation and its public health.
I want you to know that my office will continue to stay in close contact with the local, state, and federal stakeholders to asses our preparedness and ensure that California has all of the resources necessary to meet this challenge head-on. As always, my office is here to assist you with any questions, concerns, or issues you may be facing with federal agencies, and we will continue to share information with you as it becomes available.
Below are some important reminders from the Centers for Disease Control on how to prevent the spread of coronavirus. These are also posted on my dedicated webpage in response to the coronavirus, where I will regularly post any relevant updates for California’s second district.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there is currently no vaccine to prevent COVID-19. The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. The CDC recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
- Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask (facemasks are only needed for those who show symptoms of coronavirus).
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
