Rep. Huffman addresses questions about Prop. 50, ICE operations, more
This Sunday, Rep. Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) fielded questions from community members at a town hall meeting at the Sam Lopez Community Center in Crescent City.
The congressman addressed questions about local issues, including work on Last Chance Grade and the $2.1 billion diversionary tunnel plan that Caltrans is planning to undertake at that site, as well as a number of state and national issues like the ongoing government shutdown, which had pushed into its fifth day by Sunday morning.
Prop. 50
Huffman received applause when addressing Prop. 50, the redistricting measure appearing before voters in November, which would restructure the state’s congressional districts to potentially add five Democratic seats. Huffman said that he opposed political gerrymandering and that he thought California’s independent redistricting committee did “such a thoughtful job” creating a congressional map following Proposition 11. However, he noted that mid-decade redistricting efforts in North Carolina had affected last election and that further redistricting efforts in Texas, Missouri, Ohio, Kansas and possibly Florida in order to secure larger Republican shares of seats in those states would represent a larger threat to democracy in the U.S.
