Four Mendocino County community health clinics were awarded approximately $5.5 million in federal funds Thursday, U.S. Rep. Jared Huffman, D-San Rafael, announced.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration awarded more than $16 million in one-time discretionary funds to 11 health centers throughout the North Coast.

The funding is expected to be used to support the ongoing work performed by the health centers, which provide primary and preventive medical services to underserved areas, according to Huffman’s office.

Mendocino Coast Clinics in Fort Bragg was awarded $1.1 million; Mendocino Community Health Clinic in Ukiah, $2.4 million; Redwood Coast Medical Services in Gualala, $1.1 million; and the Long Valley Health Center in Laytonville was awarded $942,000.

“These funds will help thousands of people get the care they need,” Huffman said in a statement. “I’m thankful that our health centers continue to receive federal support, and I will keep working to make sure they can consistently and effectively serve our vulnerable and rural populations.”

Last month, community medical centers in Mendocino, Del Norte, Humboldt, Marin and Trinity counties received more than $1.3 million in federal funding to tackle prescription drug and substance abuse.
