Congress shakes the money tree
The U.S. Postal Service is ramping up its effort to fight climate change, pledging to invest in charging infrastructure and deploying more than 66,000 electric vehicles by 2028, making a majority of its new vehicle purchases electric. The USPS had drawn criticism that it's planned vehicle purchases weren't in line with federal climate efforts, and it new announcement on Tuesday brought praise from environmental groups and Democratic lawmakers.
Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chair Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.), who along with progressive California Democrat Rep. Jared Huffman took the lead in pushing USPS to go electric, hailed the decision: “I will continue my efforts to ensure the Postal Service is using funds from the Inflation Reduction Act effectively, push for every part of the postal fleet to be environmentally-friendly and union-made, and ensure this essential institution provides timely service to the American people for generations to come,” Peters said in a press release.
