$7 million grant to pay for SMART Pathway completion from Santa Rosa to Sonoma County airport
A new $7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program will go toward the completion of a segment of the SMART Pathway/Great Redwood Trail that stretches from Santa Rosa to the Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport.
The funding was secured by U.S. Reps. Jared Huffman, D-San Rafael, and Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena.
The segment will close a nearly 5-mile gap in the pathway network, which was created to enhance mobility for bicyclists and pedestrians in Sonoma and Marin counties, according to a news release from Huffman’s office.
The construction of the segment will complete 21 miles of the multiuse pathway and connect communities from the town of Windsor to Petaluma, the release noted.
The path will also be completely separated from motor vehicle traffic, allowing pedestrians and bicyclists to travel safely between communities and SMART rail stations.
“Completing this segment will create even greater system safety and utility with options for local and longer trips for this climate-friendly travel choice,” Huffman said in the release.
More than 28 miles of SMART Pathway have been completed with an additional 9½ miles underway, Huffman said.
