McKinleyville Community Forest Management Plan
On January 31, 2024, the McKinleyville Community Services District (MCSD) announced the close of escrow on 599 acres of timberlands in northwestern Humboldt County, slated to become the McKinleyville Community Forest. This funding will help survey the existing timber, wildlife, vegetation, watershed, and cultural resources, and then contribute to developing the Management Plan that will guide the watershed restoration and development of the Forest.
“The McKinleyville Community Forest is one of our community’s most treasured assets,” said Parks and Recreation Director Kirsten Messmer. “This funding allows us to improve safety, expand accessibility, and invest in long-term forest and watershed health that will benefit residents, visitors and the forest itself for generations.”
“We are very thankful for the funding from Congressman Huffman. It is really going to make a difference and help us to restore the watershed and improve the forest for the community and the ecosystem,” Gregory Orsini, McKinleyville Community Services District Board member and Chair of the McKinleyville Community Forest Committee, added.
