Rep. Huffman Signs Discharge Petition to Force Vote to Restore Vital Net Neutrality Protections
Washington, D.C.- Congressman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) today signed a discharge petition to restore open internet protections, a procedural step that could force a vote over the objection of Speaker Paul Ryan and the House Republican majority who have refused to even debate restoring the net neutrality rules that the Trump administration’s Federal Communications Commission (FCC) dismantled in December.
“Since President Trump’s FCC chairman made the decision to repeal net neutrality protections, thousands of my constituents have contacted my office opposing this dangerous and unfair policy,” said Rep. Huffman. “This outrage is warranted: net neutrality is the simple and important idea that the internet should be a level playing field for all users. Net neutrality protects small businesses, innovators, and consumers on the North Coast – and the rest of the country – from blocking and discrimination by their internet service provider. The Trump administration and this Republican Congress are standing with special interests over the public interest, and with this discharge petition, I’m joining with my House Democratic colleagues to force a vote to keep the internet free and open.”
This week, the United States Senate voted with bipartisan support to overturn the FCC repeal of net neutrality.
