Huffman Statement on Project 2025 Director’s Choreographed Resignation, Trump’s Hollow Efforts to Distance from Authoritarian Plan

July 30, 2024

Today, U.S. Representative Jared Huffman (CA-02), founder of the Stop Project 2025 Task Force, released the following statement regarding the news that Heritage Foundation's Presidential Transition Project Director Paul Dans has resigned, and related reports that Donald Trump and his campaign are desperately trying to distance themselves from Project 2025:

“This personnel shell game is not fooling anyone. Trump’s innermost circle worked with Heritage to write Project 2025. They published it in collaboration with 110 leading MAGA groups. They spent more than a year crowing about it as the “war plan” for a second Trump administration. They’ve built training academies and a 20,000-person database of MAGA loyalists to populate a second Trump administration. Paul Dans himself recently boasted that he would soon give notice to Heritage so that he could go back to work for Trump.

“These attempts to create the appearance of distance between Trump and Project 2025 are happening because Americans are starting to learn about this extreme takeover plan for Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans to quickly dismantle checks and balances, amass unprecedented presidential power, and seize total control over our government and our individual freedoms. With recent polling showing how deeply toxic Project 2025 is with the American people, Trump and his political advisors are in full retreat, suggesting they know nothing about Project 2025 and feigning outrage at the notion that their plan is actually their plan.

“Americans are not stupid, and neither are the members of our Stop Project 2025 Task Force. We will continue working with dozens of leading advocacy groups and experts to bring Trump’s Project 2025 out of the shadows and spotlight it for the American people. Trump can run but he cannot hide. His SuperPAC recently pulled its “TrumpProject2025” web page off the internet, as if we wouldn’t notice. Chris LaCivita is play-fighting with Paul Dans and other MAGA allies, as if that’s believable. I’m sure we’ll soon see hollow promises that the dozens of Trump loyalists and the deep well of rightwing dark money behind Project 2025 will somehow be unwelcome in a second Trump administration.

“No amount of spinning or play-fighting can change the fact that Donald Trump is inextricably intertwined with Project 2025. His inner circle wrote it and published it. His closest allies, from JD Vance to Steve Bannon, have promised to use it as the blueprint for a second Trump administration. And we have the receipts.”
