Huffman Statement on Anti-Choice Bill

June 19, 2013

WASHINGTON—Congressman Jared Huffman released the following statement after voting no on H.R. 1797 last night, which bans abortions after 20 weeks, with no exception to protect a woman’s health.

"This week, as millions of Americans continue to look for jobs, as our economy teeters in a fragile recovery, as sequester cuts are hurting families across the country, and with our budget process stalled because Speaker Boehner refuses to appoint a conference committee so that negotiations can begin, the House Republican majority chose to waste several more days of Congress’ time pandering to their anti-choice, anti-women political base instead of trying to solve our country’s problems," Congressman Huffman said. "I voted no on this anti-choice political theater masquerading as a bill, which would turn back the clock 50 years on reproductive choice and endangers the lives of women.  I will continue to urge Speaker Boehner and his GOP colleagues to stop wasting Congress’ time with ideological stunts that have no chance of becoming law, and start working with Democrats to try and solve the serious problems of this country."
