Huffman Named to Key Public Lands Panel

October 03, 2013

WASHINGTON—Congressman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) announced today that he has been named to the House Subcommittee on Public Lands and Environmental Regulation, responsible for the oversight of all matters related to the National Park System, U.S. Forests, and other public lands, as well as major environmental statutes like the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).

“I’m pleased to join the subcommittee that oversees federal public lands, including the numerous forests, parks, and wilderness in my Northern California congressional district,” Congressman Huffman said. “I look forward to working on a balanced approach to resource management, defending against attacks on our environment, and bringing to the subcommittee a renewed focus on fighting climate change.”

The Subcommittee handles all legislation and oversight activities concerning federal land management agencies such as the National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service. On the subcommittee, Huffman will also oversee outdoor recreation programs and other protected resources, including wilderness, wild and scenic rivers, historic preservation programs, trails, and the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

Huffman also attended his first Subcommittee hearing today on a series of public lands bills, and noted that the hearing was held without the benefit of expertise from the National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service, which have been shut down by the House Republicans’ insistence on repealing the Affordable Care Act.

Huffman also serves on the House Natural Resources Committee’s Water & Power and Energy & Mineral Resources subcommittees as well as the House Committee on the Budget.
