Huffman: Finish the Budget!

June 20, 2013

WASHINGTON—Today, Congressman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) called upon Speaker Boehner to appoint representatives to a conference committee on the budget so Congress can reach an agreement that creates jobs, strengthens the middle class, and reduces the deficit.

“After months of criticizing the Senate for not producing a budget, Speaker Boehner is refusing to move forward and work out the differences between the House and Senate budgets,” Congressman Huffman said. “It’s shameful that Congress cannot agree on a federal budget—and that congressional leaders would choose to not even try.”

Huffman signed a discharge petition led by Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), which would force consideration of H. Res. 174, putting the House on record to immediately request a conference and appoint conferees to negotiate an FY2014 Budget resolution conference agreement with the Senate that replaces the sequester and puts our nation on a fiscally sustainable path.

It has been over 90 days since both the House and Senate passed Budget resolutions.  In that time, our nation has seen the sequester hit, harming our military, hurting our children’s education, reducing services for our seniors, and cutting unemployment benefits.
