Rep. Huffman Announces State of the Union Guest
Washington, D.C.- Today, Congressman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) announced that he has invited his constituent and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program recipient Alex DeLeon, to attend the 2019 State of the Union address as his guest.
“As President Trump continues to spew his hateful rhetoric on his medieval border wall, I’m grateful to have DACA recipient Alex DeLeon by my side at this State of the Union,” said Rep. Huffman. “Alex embodies what is so great about America: since coming here as a young child, Alex has made Marin proud as she studies hard and works towards her goals. Alex’s presence and bravery tonight stands in stark contrast to President Trump’s callous decision to end the DACA program. Alex and the thousands of other DREAMers deserve certainty and security to pursue their dreams, while enriching America as a whole. I will keep pushing policies that fix our broken immigration system, while reflecting our values, honoring the contributions immigrants have always made, and treating Alex and all the others who deserve their shot at citizenship with fairness and compassion.”
“The DACA program gives students like me certainty for the future and an opportunity to succeed, but President Trump has put our aspirations in jeopardy,” said Alex de Leon. “I know I’m going to make something out of myself one day as I’m currently on path to fulfilling my ultimate dream of becoming an immigration lawyer, but only if President Trump allows DACA to live on. I’m glad to attend the State of the Union and tell President Trump and Congress to save the DACA program to allow nearly 800,000 young Americans, like me, to keep working towards their dreams and making a difference in the only country that they call home.”
Since transferring from College of Marin, Alex has attended University of California San Diego, where she is double majoring in Political Science and Ethnic Studies. She previously interned in Rep. Huffman’s office and has been an outspoken advocate for the DACA program.
