The Affordable Care Act
October 01, 2013
The Affordable Care Act means access to quality, affordable health care for California’s North Coast.
As of October 1, open enrollment in California’s health insurance exchange, Covered CA, has begun. Covered CA is a new, easy-to-use marketplace where you and your family may get financial assistance to make coverage more affordable and where you will be able to compare and choose health coverage that best fits your needs and budget. For any enrollment questions, call the Covered CA hotline: 800-300-1506

Other ways the Affordable Care Act is benefiting the North Coast:
- Your insurer cannot drop you when you get sick.
- Your insurer can no longer impose a lifetime limit on your coverage.
- Your insurer must allow your young children to stay on or join your insurance plan until they turn 26.
- You have free coverage of key preventive services such as mammograms, colonoscopy and immunizations.
- Starting in January, your insurer cannot discriminate against you if you have or develop a pre-existing condition
- Rate Review: Insurance companies must now justify any health insurance rate increase of 10% or more before raising your premium.
- Insurance companies must spend 80% of health care premiums on health care rather than administrative, overhead, and marketing costs. If your insurance doesn’t meet this requirement, you’ll get a rebate from your premiums.
