Over $11 Million on the Way for the North Coast: An Update from Rep. Jared Huffman
Hello,
I have some exciting news to share: this week President Joe Biden signed into law a historic funding package for the government and local programs that keep our country running. This year’s bill was particularly consequential, because for the first time in over a decade, it includes funding for community-based projects. And I’m incredibly pleased to share that I was able to secure more than $11.5 million for nine projects in our district. From affordable housing and disaster preparedness to kelp forest recovery and repairing active transportation routes, this funding will address some of the most pressing needs of our region.

Standing with Ukraine
I am horrified by Russia’s continued attacks against Ukraine, and we will not subsidize Putin’s unjust attack on democracy. I had the honor of attending President Zelensky’s virtual address to Congress on Wednesday. It was a powerful and sobering call to action, and the bravery and passion he and his people have shown is an inspiration to the world. The U.S. is continuing to impose severe sanctions and provide Ukrainians with the resources they need. Last week, I voted to ban the import of Russian oil and energy into the U.S. and to send $13.6 billion in humanitarian, military, and economic assistance for Ukraine as part of the bipartisan funding package. But the real blow to Russia’s power will be a complete transition to clean energy -- cutting off oligarchs and would-be dictators like Putin from the dirty energy profits that fund their autocratic impulses.

Building a Strong Economy
We recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of the American Rescue Plan. Since then, we’ve seen historic and record-breaking growth. According to recent reports, there have been 7.4 million new jobs created, a 40% reduction in child poverty, an unemployment decrease from 6.4% to 3.8%, and 200 million vaccines delivered to fight the pandemic. The American Rescue Plan led to the strongest year of job growth ever recorded, as well as the fastest economic growth in almost 40 years. We know that families across the country and the world are feeling the financial impacts of Putin’s war, but Democrats are doing everything we can to minimize the strain here at home and continue growing our economy.

- Congress overwhelmingly passed the Emmett Till Anti-Lynching Act, long overdue legislation that will designate lynching as a hate crime under federal law. Despite more than 200 attempts since 1900, lynching has never been designated a federal crime - until now. I’m proud to have voted for this historic bill, which is now heading to President Biden’s desk.
- As Chair of the Water, Oceans, and Wildlife Subcommittee, I held a hearing on the Klamath River Basin’s drought conditions. We discussed the impacts from climate change on the river’s ecosystems, water supply challenges, and long-term solutions to improve the health of fish and wildlife.
- In a Natural Resources hearing, we discussed my bipartisan bill, H.R. 4178, which would extend the authority to collect Shasta-Trinity marina fees. The Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area is a central economic driver in the community, and my bill would support Trinity County and its growing outdoor recreation economy.
- I am pleased to announce that my office is now accepting submissions for the annual Congressional Art Competition. High school students can submit their original artwork for a chance to have their art displayed in the Capitol.
