Did You Miss Our Presidential Transition Town Hall?
Last week, I had the honor of hosting a virtual town hall to discuss and answer questions on the upcoming Presidential Transition, challenges to election results, and the importance of accountability and the role Congress plays in oversight. I was excited to be joined by Caroline Fredrickson a Senior Fellow for Brennan Center for Justice and formerly the president of the American Constitution Society, the leading progressive legal organization in the country. My other special guest came from the other side of the aisle: Paul Rosenzweig, a leading conservative legal author who was a senior counsel to Ken Starr during the investigation of President Bill Clinton, and went on to serve as a deputy assistant secretary of Homeland Security in the administration of President George W. Bush.
The peaceful transition of power is at the very core of our democracy, and many of us have had questions about what that transition will look like. My guests shared their experiences preparing for past Presidential transitions—processes conducted in good faith to keep the American government working the way it should. We also discussed the ongoing litigation being pursued questioning the integrity of the election. We agreed that all the evidence is clear: With the state certifications coming in and the Supreme Court's actions, the presidential election results were valid.
Finally, I asked what Congress could do through legislation, hearings, and oversight to set a higher standard for Presidents and the executive branch in the years ahead, and received great responses from the panelists and from my constituents. We in Congress have a lot of work to do to strengthen the norms that keep elected officials responsible for their actions and uphold our democracy.
I hope you were able to tune in to watch and participate in our virtual town hall. If you missed the event, or want to watch it again, you can view it on Facebook here or Youtube here.
