Weekly Update From Rep. Huffman

July 02, 2020

Hello,

Happy Fourth of July! This weekend is a time to celebrate America, and it’s important that we remember to keep the country and everyone in it safe. Festivities this year will, can, and should, look different. Enjoy our public lands, join with family when safe – but keep in mind the pandemic is resurging. It is more important than ever to wear a mask, avoid crowded areas, and practice good hygiene. In California, wildfire season is 24/7: so please, do not use fireworks and report any illegal use you see.

We've had an incredibly productive stretch in the People’s House – more than I can cover in one email. We’ve passed bills for police reform and equal justice, lowering health care costs, and protecting renters and homeowners from eviction. This week, we also unveiled the Climate Crisis Action Plan, and voted on the Moving Forward Act, an historic investment in our nation’s infrastructure.

Here’s a little more on all of this important work happening for the people:

Climate Crisis Action Plan
Yesterday, I joined Speaker Pelosi, Chair Castor, and our Select Committee majority to launch a comprehensive plan to save the planet and build a more healthy, just, and resilient America.

The Climate Crisis touches every part of our lives – the economy, infrastructure, public health – and our future. And we need to tackle each element of this crisis if we are going to have a fighting chance to save our planet and build a more healthy, just and resilient America. No half measures, no empty promises. Our plan represents over a year of hearings, roundtables, and feedback from countless folks across the US. It’s an honor that the plan includes several of my bills to address the climate crisis and am ready to put these plans into action.

H.R. 2, a Transformational Infrastructure Bill to Create Jobs and Rebuild America
America has called for action to fix our crumbling infrastructure, and after years of empty talk from politicians about change, House Democrats have stepped up with the transformative Moving Forward Act. I have spent my career developing legislation to meaningfully invest in infrastructure and make the changes needed to build a clean and resilient future. The Moving Forward Act includes my proposals to modernize postal vehicles, deploy broadband in rural and Tribal areas, and build more sustainable water infrastructure. It’s time we stop just talking about infrastructure and actually make laws to invest in our nation.

Oversight on Use of Police Force on Peaceful Protestors
We had an important oversight hearing in Natural Resources this week to examine the use of police force. In June, the U.S. park police attacked peaceful protestors at Lafayette Square. I was disappointed to hear some of my colleagues on the other side of the aisle mock this hearing, and I am committed to exercising our oversight authority and stand with the peaceful protestors calling for racial justice.
