Offshore Drilling 101, And The Push For Decommissioning
California lawmakers are renewing calls to decommission offshore oil drilling operations on the Pacific coast. This week’s spill of over 130,000 gallons of oil outside of Orange County is a reminder that many of the wells, platforms and pipelines are aging and unstable. But if the state did move to decommission these rigs – what would that process look like? Today on AirTalk, we’re talking to Jared Huffman, U.S. Representative for California's 2nd congressional district, and KPCC’s Sharon McNary, who covers infrastructure. We’ll also talk to Jerry Schubel, president emeritus at the Aquarium of the Pacific, and Ben Oakley, California Coastal Region Manager for the Western States Petroleum Association, to get a sense of the costs and benefits of decommissioning.
