Reps. Huffman, Sarbanes to Hold Forums on Election Reform in North Bay Area

May 28, 2014

Washington—Next week, Congressmen Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) and John Sarbanes (D-Maryland), a Congressional leader on election reform and author of the Government by the People Act, will hold two forums on election reform in the North Bay Area.

On Monday, June 2, Huffman and Sarbanes will hold a forum in Petaluma at the Petaluma Community Center from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The forum will be moderated by Professor David McCuan of Sonoma State University.

On Tuesday, June 3—election day—Huffman and Sarbanes will hold a timely forum in San Rafael at the Frank Lloyd Wright Civic Center from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.

Huffman and Sarbanes will be joined at both forums by Emily Rusch, Executive Director of CALPIRG, Helen Grieco, Northern California Organizer for Common Cause, Trent Lange, President of California Clean Money Campaign, and other community leaders. Both events are free and open to the public and media representatives

The Citizens United and McCutcheon decisions took a broken campaign finance system and made it far worse. The Supreme Court has opened the door to unlimited spending by near-anonymous special interests that drown out the voices of average Americans. One solution, the Government by the People Act, would amplify the voices of average Americans and help level the playing field.

Until we fix the campaign finance system, our broader aspirations for policy reforms—including action on immigration reform, tax reform, climate change, gun violence, and any number of other issues that ordinary Americans care about—will face powerful political headwinds.
