Willits celebrates 125 years

November 20, 2013

Community members gathered in the Willits Community Center to celebrate the city's 125th birthday on Thursday, Nov. 14. Willits incorporated as a city on Nov. 19, 1888.

The evening began with a welcome to attendees and thanks expressed to event organizer, Deputy City Clerk Cathy Sanders. The City of Willits was awarded a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from Congressman Jared Huffman's representative, Heidi Dickerson. The certificate was presented "in recognition of outstanding and invaluable service to the community."

"Happy birthday. I was in this room the night you turned 100, and you don't look any older now. I'm really proud to be a part of this community," said Mendocino County Sheriff Tom Allman.

"Happy birthday, Willits. What an exciting 125 years," said Willits Chamber of Commerce President Ron Moorhead.

City Manager Adrianne Moore unveiled three framed birthday cards signed by hundreds of Willits residents. The last card was left unframed, to be signed the evening of the celebration, and later framed and hung with the rest.

The Emandal Chorale, lead by Don Willis, sang "Happy Birthday" and "Lily in the Valley" before everyone gathered in the WCT for cake, coffee, and conversation.

"There's something magical about this city, whether you came here or were born here," said Vice Mayor Ron Orenstein.
