Progressives call on Biden to repeal Willow approval

The administration is facing litigation related to the oil and gas project's environmental impacts.

Progressive lawmakers Thursday continued their campaign against a controversial oil and gas project in Alaska, urging the Biden administration to repeal the project approval it granted last month.

In a letter to Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, Reps. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) and 30 other Democrats wrote that they had “serious concerns” about Interior’s approval of ConocoPhillips Co.’s Willow project on Alaska's North Slope. They called on the Bureau of Land Management to suspend the company’s permit for construction.

It was Democrats' latest show of discontent for the fossil fuel project, which has pitted the Biden administration against environmentalists and some Alaska Native communities who have denounced Interior's approval as a violation of federal statutes and a step backward in efforts to slash carbon emissions.

The groups have sued to stop the project, alleging in a complaint last month in the U.S. District Court for the District of Alaska that BLM violated the National Environmental Policy Act, as well as provisions of the Naval Petroleum Reserves Production Act, the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act and other federal laws.
