Huffman Statement on House Passage of Student Loan Bill

July 31, 2013

WASHINGTON—Congressman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) released the following statement after the House voted to pass the bipartisan Senate-passed student loan bill:

“At a time when we need higher education more than ever to be competitive in the global economy, this bill provides immediate relief to help ensure that it won’t be priced out of reach for millions and millions of Americans,” Congressman Huffman said. “It’s not a perfect bill—the caps are too high, in particular, but the Senate made important improvements and this gives us the time to keep working on the issue in the next few years while rates remain low.”

Huffman previously voted against H.R. 1911, the House GOP student loan bill which would have cost students and families an additional $3.7 billion over the next decade in interest payments relative to current law.
